Public Health Annual Report 2025-26: Why it matters

With the limited resources we have, the best way to work is by working together and pooling resources, understanding that together we are bigger than the sum of parts

The population health and wellbeing needs in one area of Nottingham are often different from those in another. Similarly, the best approach to care provision will vary between areas – influenced by the culture and age profile.

Nottingham: facts and figures

WATCH: see Nottingham’s population and health data on a 3D city map, created with the University of Nottingham.

You will see that Nottingham is a diverse city of around 330,000 residents, characterised by wide ranging demographics, cultural identities and health needs:

  • Nottingham is culturally diverse, with four in every 10 residents belonging to Black and Minority Ethnic group1
  • One in seven residents are full-time university students resulting in areas of the city with much younger age profiles2
  • Nottingham experiences high levels of deprivation: it ranks 11th most deprived district nationally3
  • There is an eight-year difference in life expectancy between the most and least affluent areas of Nottingham4
  • One in every 15 residents live with five or more long‑term health conditions5

A neighbourhood approach, where organisations work in smaller geographies, co-produce services with the community, and integrate with other support organisations, is of huge benefit in Nottingham – a city with clear diversity, as well as significant deprivation and a high proportion of residents living with coexisting long-term conditions.

Nottingham is fortunate to benefit from the work and dedication of a large range of local teams and organisations who have adopted a neighbourhood approach to service delivery.
