A “neighbourhood” can mean different things to different people – and that’s okay. It might be defined by where people live, the communities they belong to, or the services they use. At its heart, a neighbourhood is a group of people whose lives are shaped by the same local environment.
Neighbourhood working means bringing services closer to people and shaping them around local needs. It is built on three principles:
- Working at a local level – delivering services in smaller areas so support is easier to reach and everyday barriers are reduced.
- Joining-up services – helping organisations work together so people receive joined‑up, whole‑person support.
- Listening to communities – using local insight, data and community voices to design services that reflect what matters most locally.

A good example of how all three principles have been brought together in our city can be found in Bulwell and Top Valley Primary Care Network.
