Protection doesn’t stop in childhood.
Many people think vaccinations are something we leave behind once we’re grown up.
In reality, vaccinations help protect us throughout our lives.
As we get older, travel, start families, develop health conditions or work in certain roles, we may need additional vaccinations to help protect ourselves and those around us.
Vaccinations are one of the simplest ways to reduce the risk of serious illness and help us stay healthy, independent and connected to the people and activities we love.
Vaccinations for every stage of life
Throughout adulthood, different vaccinations may be recommended depending on your age, health and circumstances.
You may be offered vaccinations if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have a long-term health condition
- Are aged 65 and over
- Work in health or care settings
- Are eligible for seasonal vaccinations
- Plan to travel abroad
Staying up to date with recommended vaccinations can help reduce the risk of serious illness, hospitalisation and complications.
Protecting more than yourself
Vaccinations do more than help protect the person receiving them.
They also help protect:
- Babies who are too young to be vaccinated
- Older relatives
- Friends and neighbours with weakened immune systems
- People living with long-term health conditions
When more people are protected, our communities become healthier and more resilient.
Common adult vaccinations
- Flu vaccination: The flu vaccine is offered annually to eligible groups and helps reduce the risk of serious illness during the winter months.
- COVID-19 vaccination: Seasonal COVID-19 vaccinations continue to be offered to eligible groups who are at greater risk of becoming seriously unwell.
- Shingles vaccination: Shingles can be painful and may lead to long-term complications. Vaccination helps reduce the risk of developing shingles and its effects.
- RSV vaccination: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can cause serious illness in older adults and young babies. Vaccination is available for eligible groups.
- Pregnancy vaccinations: Some vaccinations are recommended during pregnancy to help protect both parent and baby during the first months of life.
- Travel vaccinations: If you’re travelling overseas, you may need additional vaccinations depending on your destination.
